Steve Stoute's NY Times Ad

I really didn't want to make a post about this, but I feel I have to now. If you have not already heard, Record Executive, Steve Stoute, took out a $40,000 ad in the NY Times to bash Arcade Fire and the Grammy's. The short version is that he feels hip-hop does not get the recognition it deserves....that and apparently this man thinks Justin Bieber deserved a Grammy (he doesn't). Anyway, Stoute claims that Bieber sold more records than Arcade Fire and therefore deserves the award over the indie rock band. I personally am very pleased that the little brat didn't walk away with anything and that true musicians Arcade Fire received album of the year. AF's manager recently spoke out saying that the band owns all the rights to their masters and are not necessarily a radio single band, but a live performance band. Once again, as a huge support of independent music, I support this and see this as a big 'Fuck You' to the man upstairs. It just goes to show you, no matter what you fat cats market, no matter what you decide is popular and what is dubbed a 'hit single' people will recognize real music. People will recognize talent and people will support that. You know I love hip-hop and you know I love indie rock, but things like this make me shake my head in disgust. Arcade Fire, keep the real music alive, Steve Stoute, go fuck yourself!

Blogpacker's Freshmen Class of 2011

You already know I had to make my own freshmen class. Well here it goes...in no particular order of course.

  1. Mac Miller - Dude has made some serious moves towards the end of 2010. With a co-sign from big brother Wiz Khalifa and frat boys everywhere, the kid formerly known as 'Easy Mac' has established a strong following.
  2. Kendrick Lamar - After dropping a dope EP at the ending of '09, K-Dot hits us with a just as dope full length in '10. Now working on a collaborative project with J. Cole as well as doing some work on Detox with Dr Dre, Kendrick is a no brainer for the freshmen class.
  3. Big K.R.I.T. - Another guy who had an awesome year. his indie debut 'KRIT wuz here' was sick, and as he scores points for production as well as a super smooth flow, KRIT is someone to watch this year.
  4. Yelawolf - The man with the mullet has dropped nothing but nasty verses with his crazy flow last year. Oh yeah and he signed with Eminem's Shady Records...any reason to NOT look out for this dude?
  5. Cyhi The Prynce -  I promise, every artist after this guy will differ from XXL's list. Cyhi made some major moves showing and proving himself last year on the GOOD Friday joints. Def a force to be reckoned with this coming year.
  6. Tyler, The Creator - Honestly, i just got into this guy after the Jimmy Fallon performance. That was all the convincing i needed...well that a listen through to his indie debut "Bastard."
  7. XV - With 2 without a doubt sick mixtapes (at least) under his belt and a record contract with Warner Bros, Vizzy is doing big things this year. He's already working some big names for his singles and is showing and proving himself on the net.
  8. Tiron - Tiron has been silent on the mainstream front, however, anyone in the know has a copy of MSTRD on their hard drive and probably still bump it. Trust me, dude is nice.
  9. Dom Kennedy - Reppin for the new west, Dom Kennedy. 'From The Westside With Love' was a dope tape and Dom def has the persona to remain in the limelight for a minute.
  10. Stalley - I first heard this guy on that Curren$y joiny address form Pilot Talk. Ever since i been doin my hw on dude. Flow is sick, def got some lasting power here, once again, keep an eye on this guy.

XXL Freshmen Class 2011

This year XXL throws a curve ball our way by selecting 11 instead of 10 rappers for their freshmen list. XXL chose Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T., Cyhi The Prynce, Lil Twist, Yelawolf, Fred The Godson, Mac Miller, YG, Lil B, Kendrick Lamar and Diggy Simmons. However, since i don't very much agree with this list, i will be making the Blogpacker's version shortly after this post. On that note, congrats to this years Freshmen class.

Mac Miller - She Said (Prod by Khrysis)

Mac Miller just let loose of this new joint off his upcoming mixtape "Best Day Ever." Also, Mac has been featured as one of this years XXL Freshmen, clap for em!

Melo Comes to NY

Carmelo 'Melo' Anthony has become a New York Knickerbacher! Along with a few other players. (including former and now current Knick Chauncey Billups, up and comer Corey Brewer, and a few bench warmers) Anyway, as a big Knicks fan, this is great news to me! I will be ordering my Jersey ASAP!

Happy Birthday J Dilla

Yesterday was Bob Marley's birthday, today we celebrate the birthday of another late, great musician. James Dewitt "J Dilla" Yancey was born today in 1974. As the main producer for the legendary group, Slum Village, and countless other production credits, Dilla Dawg is a staple in true school hip-hop. RIP Jay Dee, you live on through your loved ones and your music.

Okay, I know I said I was only gonna post stuff people send me, but screw it nobody has sent me shit. So i'm pack to posting stuff i think is dope, starting with this. So they dropped off this new EP that returns to their chill stoner roots. Props to TSIS for the link.
